Pilot

My name is Douglas Newbigging. I study botany at the University of British Columbia.

I am creating this blog so I can share all the interesting and captivating experiments, ideas and research projects I encounter in my undergraduate endeavors.

I'm majoring in botany and thus you should expect that most of these posts will stem from the field of plant biology.

I feel like a lot of people aren't exposed enough to what's really happening in the world of plant biology. A lot of the extremely interesting and important findings from this field are overlooked. It is my hope to both spark an interest in botany for you and to help you appreciate the importance of the work coming from this field.

With that being said, it should be clear that I am still an undergraduate student and thus my ability to perform independent research is quite limited. Thus, most of the ideas I will discuss will likely come from lectures, presentations and laboratory experiments I encounter. Often the ideas will be ripped directly from research papers which to the untrained eye might be extremely difficult to read due to various factors such as terminology and a small background in the field in general. I will aim to simplify these papers and bring forth the general ideas on which they focus allowing a quick easy-to-follow read anyone can enjoy.

I have performed one fairly sophisticated independent research project and I plan on covering that some time in late December. It's always fun to conduct your own experiments and I will definitely make a detailed post about the work my lab partners and I did.

So, please, if you feel you want to learn a little bit about what is happening in the world of plant biology follow my blog!

In the meantime, enjoy this picture of a toad lily taken by my friend and colleague, Midy Liou.
